Policy Expert offers five levels of home insurance cover: Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each tier provides cover for standard risks including fire, smoke, flooding, storms, theft and escape of water or oil.
As you move up through the tiers, the level of cover increases. This includes higher limits for buildings and contents, higher single-item limits for valuables, and larger allowances for alternative accommodation and outbuildings. Higher tiers also include more features as standard.
Gold and Platinum provide the highest levels of cover, with enhanced limits and a broader range of included benefits compared to Basic, Bronze and Silver. Optional extras such as accidental damage, home emergency, legal expenses and key cover can be added to policies where they are not already included.
The value of each tier depends on the level of cover provided compared to the premium charged. Higher tiers offer increased limits and more features as standard, which can be relevant for properties with higher rebuild costs or contents of greater value.
When comparing tiers, key factors include the total contents limit, single-item limits for valuables, buildings cover, and the level of alternative accommodation provided. It's also important to check which features are included as standard and which require an additional premium.
Comparing the cost of a higher tier against adding optional extras separately can help determine overall value. Lower tiers provide core protection, while higher tiers include broader cover and higher limits.
Which home insurer is best for you will depend on your own needs and circumstances. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of Policy Expert home insurance to help you make your decision:

Alongside home insurance, Policy Expert offers a number of other insurance and money products:
Policy Expert’s current home insurance wording lists Accredited Insurance (Europe) Limited, UK Branch and Bridgehaven Specialty UK Limited as its authorised insurers. Each insurer is responsible only for the proportion of the policy it has underwritten, while Policy Expert arranges and manages the insurance.
Yes, you can pay for Policy Expert home insurance in one lump sum or through monthly Direct Debit payments. The amount, collection dates and any payment terms will be provided before you buy, so check the total cost shown with your quote before choosing how to pay.
Yes, Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum policies cover damage caused by subsidence, heave or landslip. However, exclusions apply to issues such as normal settlement, coastal erosion and damage caused by structural alterations.
The standard subsidence excess is £1,000 on Basic, Bronze and Silver policies, reducing to £500 with Gold and Platinum, unless your schedule states otherwise.
Home emergency protection is available separately in Select and Plus versions. Both cover boiler failure, plumbing, blocked toilets, drainage problems and security emergencies, while Plus also includes problems involving electrics, gas pipes, roofing and pest infestations.
Select provides up to £300 per claim and two callouts each year. Plus increases this to £1,000 per claim with unlimited callouts, alongside up to £500 towards a replacement boiler when the existing one can’t be repaired. Boilers over 15 years old aren’t covered, they must have been serviced within the previous 15 months, and there’s no excess on home emergency claims.
Away-from-home protection is available as optional personal possessions cover, rather than being automatically included with the main home insurance tiers. It can cover belongings, valuables and bicycles outside your property, with limits confirmed in your schedule.
The maximum overseas trip length is 30 days with Basic, Bronze and Silver, 45 days with Gold and 60 days with Platinum. Cover for money and individual possessions also increases through the higher tiers.
Cover depends heavily on the tier you choose. Basic doesn’t cover buildings or contents in outbuildings, while buildings cover for outbuildings starts from Bronze.
Contents in outbuildings are covered up to £2,500 with Silver, £5,000 with Gold and £25,000 with Platinum. Cover for belongings left in the open is also available from Silver, with limits of £750 for Silver, £1,000 for Gold and £5,000 for Platinum.
Your general excess is shown in your policy schedule, but some claims have separate amounts:
Subsidence: £1,000 with Basic, Bronze and Silver, or £500 with Gold and Platinum
Escape of water or oil: £500 with Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, unless the schedule states otherwise
Accidental damage: Some Bronze and Silver accidental-damage sections carry a £250 excess
Home emergency: No excess applies
